Class Description:

A study of estimating construction materials, labor and costs, through reading drawings, calculating work quantities, and costing construction work. Emphasis is placed estimating from a general contractors and subcontractor perspective.

Student Learning Outcomes:

• Perform manual quantity take-offs within accepted levels of accuracy for sample projects.
• Perform quantity take-offs using a sample project on standardized forms to facilitate review.
• Exercise judgment in estimating waste factors for materials, using standards on sample project.
• Address ethical dilemmas and safety concerns within the construction estimating process.
• Create parametric and analogous estimates to use as order-of-magnitude project assessments.
• Develop project bid packages utilizing on-screen take-off software and the cost databases to do the following.
• Identify labor, material, and equipment and estimate costs for project packages.
• Organize a project into work packages from electronic plans and specifications.
• Analyze subcontract and material supplier quotes for work packages.
• Exercise ethical judgment in bid compilation and assessment.
• Identify safety concerns that affect project bids
